London, I Love You / 倫敦我愛你

On our way to Paddington station today, we took the wrong bus in the beginning, but fortunately the kind driver gave us a receipt to take the right one for free. When we got on bus 36, I confirmed with the black driver to make sure that we wouldn't err again. He nodded replying, "I'll take you there." During the ride, I heard him humming, and his voice reminded me of the story Place de Fetes in the movie Paris, Je T'aime. The seriously wounded black man asked the paramedic girl if he could have a cup of coffee with him when she went to his rescue. The whole story is narrated in flashback accompanied by the singing voice of a man. When we were about to get off, the driver turned around, his eyes following us. In a movie titled London, I Love You, what kinds of images and sounds will there be?

Men with a bouquet of flowers in their hands are in a hurry to meet their lovers. They disappear among the chattering voices of passengers who wait for their trains and the rumbling sounds of trains. Some tube lines are closed, and though the staff tries to appease the crowds by broadcasting mind-soothing talks, couples who are about to part can't let go of each other.

On weekends a lot of bars are packed with people. Some are so popular that there are tons of drinkers outside as well. At moments like this, polite and well-behaved Brits discard their good manners and just enjoy. Somehow such crowded places appear especially lonely to me. At midnight downtown, the city is enveloped in dreamy drunken feel. Blonds sleepwalk on the pavements, drivers honk, and some well-dressed Londoners chase after the buses with shoes in their hands. There must be plenty of "intoxicating" love stories.

A mother and her daughter sit across from me on the bus. The wife repeats what has happened during her day to the husband. After she's finished, she asks if her daughter wants to chat with her dad. The young girl greets him in a cheerful tone. She shares her life of the week happily with him. Speaking of a restaurant she has been to, she tells her had, "Next time when you come down, I'll take you there."

Andie is about to leave. Loving the city of London so much, she can't help saying goodbye with sentimentality.

Foreigners living in London look for love to warm their lives in a new city. Sometimes it is even so comforting to hear people of different nationalities speak languages that I don't understand. The mixture of various scales and intonations can be rather soothing.

And of course, there is my love story about coming to London for my passion. The soundtrack includes throaty humming of the central drying system in the bathroom, the creaky sound of my swivel chair,  the buzzing murmur of the micro-wave oven, the sharp shriek of the alarm clock, and your obscure but powerful mumbling at the other end of the telephone.

The movie ends with a beautiful poem. Even if the credit pages run in silence, it won't matter...
