Miss Moon 2 /

I put off sending to print the book version with my name on it for three months. Though they are only five small words, they make a whole world's difference. When I pick the books, I inquire about some printing problems with the printing shop technician. He says many problems of digital printing can be avoided in traditional printing. I said, "OK, give me some time. I'll get the opportunity to have my work printed in huge numbers."

I find myself in my bookshelf, imagining my book saying to other world-class books: Nice to meet you!

I don't know if I'll get a chance to tell the world about the book. It's a story about the eight-year-old Von, who can't fall asleep. He tosses and turns at night because of all sorts of worries. He even worries if he'll get married and have his own children in the future. Though I am still single with no children, I have the firm faith that he will. When my friends read the book, they find the picture their favorite. I bet it's because they can feel my longings and best wishes too!

Stone Soup study club 5 /

Today our guest speaker is Mr. Hai Huang, who is a productive sci-fi writer. Not very interested in science, I didn't particularly go for sci-fi fiction. However, after the lecture, it dawns on me again that all roads lead to Rome. In whichever genre of writing, the underlying principles are the same. In fact, it requires even more imagination to write sci-fi fiction. My jaw is about to drop several times during the talk because the examples given by Mr. Huang are way too fascinating.

In sci-fi fiction, scientific logical reasoning is especially emphasized. As a matter of fact, many sci-fi novels later become the reality. Yet, if the idea is not backed up by science, then the work should be categorized as a fantasy story. Time machines are a main theme as well as traveling both inside the human world and to the universe. Also, since a long time ago, writers have had diverse ideas about creatures from outer space. Moreover,  men and animals are interchangeable in form, or human beings can cross the  boundary between life and death. Our soul doesn't necessarily have to dwell in our physical bodies. It can take its own adventures as well.

Some themes are constantly borrowed and re-developed throughout history. Every author comes up with their own perspective to create their version of story. Mr. Huang says: What the copyright protects is the author's way of expression instead of their viewpoint. This is also one major lesson I learned when I studied in Camberwell. It's part of the idea-developing process to collect information and references.

Mr. Huang has a very relaxing style of speech, so I can't help but start to sketch. Some people come to the gatherings every week like me. I find some young mothers very impressive for they always bring along their children faithfully. The others choose their favorite lessons and come whenever they'd like to. It's kind of hard to imagine that we've attended five weeks of classes.

This year is a great year, and coming to the Stone Soup study club is one of the best things. I have thus learned how to set free my imagination. There are amazing book collections, so every Saturday I'll read some picture books to remind myself of my goal again and again.

Mr. Huang devotes his whole life to writing, and he's still full of passion for sci-fi fiction. I'd love to live in the same way too!

Banana chocolate birthday party /

What can a banana do? It can be the theme of a merry birthday party!

First let my Banana Chocolate Monkey  present the wonderful birthday gift!

And we'll top it off with the banana crepe of Canopy Cafe. As we all have to age, why don't we age with joy and grace?

A HUGE LEAP /

Before I opened the registered mail from Hsin Yi Foundation, I thought, "The rejection slips from the past few years were also this thin ... " But the surprise this time really made my day. This is my fourth time participating in the contest, and my work is finally shortlisted this year. Though I don't know if I'll make it to the final two, for me, this is already such a HUGE leap.

Compared with excellent picture book makers, I was not born with the talent. However, slowly, I've found my direction. With the coming of spring, I've found new impetus. From now on, I will work harder to write and draw picture books. I feel that I am getting closer and closer to my goal and that there will be a place for me in the diverse market!

Banana cake & Bananaman /

I was stunned yesterday when I found that Bananaman has already existed! He is a British hero created in 1980, the double of the schoolboy Eric Wimp. And the movie will come out in 2015. I can't resist his hilarious look. However, not to infringe on the copyright, I'll have to change the name of my banana hero.

Lately I've bought stuff I wouldn't in the name of looking for inspirations. For example, I accidentally walked into a store selling Japanese snacks yesterday. Upon seeing the banana cake, I immediately checked it out. Maybe I can use the idea in my story.

Bananaman restores energy by eating bananas, but I guess he probably won't say no to the aromatic and yummy banana cakes!

Last but not least, I'd like to study how bananas work as a weapon. Now whenever I do not feel upbeat, the banana-drawing therapy works miracles. The fruit is really my life savior!

Stone Soup study club 4 /

Today Bologna Book Fair 2014 has started. Though I can only think of it here, the thought motivates me to work harder.

In the fourth lesson of Stone Soup study club today, Ms. Shu-ing Tsai teaches everyone how to know our own voice. She says that our body is our organ and that we should learn to use every part well. In fact, only when we make good sounds can we tell good stories. Before infants learn to talk, they are accumulating the input adults give. Thus, grown-ups should feed them with well-written stories.

While I am listening to the talk, I realize that I tend to ignore my own voice and hearing. Even though I am required to talk a lot at work, I never take good care of my throat. Nor do I listen to myself. That's why I hardly employ the auditory description when writing.

Ms. Tsai also demonstrates how to make sounds of different animals. Because she grew up in the country, she had very keen observation. She can even show the sound differences between the old and the young of the same animal. We try our best to make sounds with our stomachs, but I am too self-aware. I still need a lot of practice in this aspect.

From now on, my stories will no longer be visual. I will make use of the five senses to enrich the text and pictures.

Banana Man / 香蕉俠

I am addicted to drawing bananas, but meanwhile I would like to further develop the idea. A while ago the boys were really into role-play. They especially loved the heroes of Justice League. In the end I came to gain a basic understanding of the roles because of them, and it occurred to me to draw the parodied versions. It's funny that the heroes are all dressed in tights and boots, which is probably most boys' fantasy!

Stone Soup study club 3 /

Having skipped the second gathering of Stone Soup study club last weekend, I came directly to the third lesson, which was hosted by Ms. Hui-chi Huang on the topic of spring in Japanese picture books. I felt all worked up upon seeing her come in with a suitcase filled with picture books. The first book is about how a delivery man drives all the way into a small snowy town in the mountains to deliver packages of spring to children. It was a visual and audio feast to look at the fantastic images and hear the teacher recite in soft Japanese.

This book titled The Flying Wolf derived from the author's personal experience on a stormy night. It talks about children's anxiety on such a night. She designed many animal roles to make the plot really interesting. Because the style of illustrations really speak to me, I find it to be irresistible.

This book based on the theme of an apple is super imaginative. The story starts with a little boy wondering if the apple on the table is really an apple. He wonders it might be an apple with something else inside. Or this world might be full of appliens. It is said the book sold extremely well in Japan.

The story in this picture book features a pair of disposable chopsticks named Wally. He wants to be used by customers badly, but no one notices him. He is so desperate that he decides to seek a new chance in other restaurants. The illustrator gave so much life to Wally that it's just impossible for the reader not to love the book.

Every time I run into the energetic lady, and it wasn't until this weekend that I discovered that she has the habit of drawing sketches.

In my later conversations with her, she explained that now she forgets easily, but if she makes an effort to sketch, she will get to keep something in her memory. She even shared her works with me. Her optimism is contagious.

Cherry flowers are a major theme in Japanese picture books. The teacher also introduced several good books about seasonal change and life cycle. These books impressed me not only with their stories but also with the sophisticated drawing skills of the illustrators.

This book about death made a lot of think. The author discusses death in a genuine and realistic tone. The illustrator also did a wonderful job. A lot of us still wanted to talk more about it afterwards.

Though I am still very far away from my dream of having my picture book published, the way to my goal is filled with happiness in that I've got to see so much. Gradually, I have found answers to some of my questions. In the afternoon, my big family and I went to the children's play The Real Prince by the Taiwanese troupe IF. I have to say this world is full of a lot of fun things. If I didn't draw picture books, I would think seriously about being an actress. Having said that, I still prefer to focus on one thing only and give it all my attention!

Views /

On my MRT ride, I run into a little girl. She keeps telling her mom about the views outside the windows. When the cars run through the tunnel, she can't hide her disappointment because there is nothing to see in the dark. And when we emerge from the dark, she yells in excitement: There are more views! I have heard the word "view" for at least five times before getting off. God knows how hard I have to refrain from letting her mom know what a lovely daughter she has.

One day when the little girl grows up, she will probably learn that life is full of views, even in the black tunnels. The views that are least noticeable are the silent change around us.

Von has been planting green beans lately. I am sure he must have seen different views of the plant. And I see the view of how he concentrates on the view.

I see you / 我看得見你

Spring is in the air. Flowers blossom one after another, and the tender green leaves on the trees transform the cityscape. Lately when I pass by a sweet gum tree, I can't help lingering under it to observe the color and veins of new leaves.

Earlier this year I had visited the oldest tree in Taipei, a sweet gum tree, but recently I've learned that the gentleman that took us there fell ill. He told us then that the old tree had once become sick. It was with the tree doctor's help that the tree survived. I bet in spring, the sweet gum tree must look rejuvenated again thanks to the canopy of young leaves. To cheer up our tour guide, I sent him a painting, hoping that he will get well soon.

There are similar life patterns in humans and plants. I've been reading a book titled What a Plant Knows. The author thinks that plants can feel what is going on in the world. If so, I believe the sweet gum tree will secretly look after our guide. Well, as for me, I shouldn't pick flowers randomly from now on.

DREAMER!

When I went to the bakery la whale in my neighborhood this week, a note on the cash register accidentally caught my attention. It said the bakers are going to participate in the Bakery Masters contest. I was so curious that I couldn't help asking the clerk for more information. So it turned out that the bakers have been chosen as the eight candidates from all over the world. Besides, they are already in Paris at this point to prepare for the competition. The short visit to a bakery I had always gone to became my inspiration.

I've encountered so many dreamers recently. To pronounce the word with force, I like to imitate how the supporting male role in the Thai version of Full House calls the heroine. By placing the stress on the second syllable of the word "drea-mer," he makes the word sound so much more powerful.

I am a dreamer too. Since I know I shine only when drawing, I have begun to brainstorm for a new story. I have a feeling that it'll be another really wonderful journey!

Stone Soup study club 1 /

I'd wanted to learn about story-writing for a while. Last week I gave up the fantastic opportunity of taking a course in ferns in NTU, but God didn't give me up. I accidentally found the Facebook webpage of The Association of Children Literature, ROC via the page of the herbarium's director. What's better, new study club sessions are scheduled to begin in March. How can I ignore such a heavenly chance?

The lecturer of the first week is Prof. Mau-hsiu Yang. He's an excellent children educator. He starts the "new semester" with several stories. Dr. Yang is such a wonderful storyteller that I don't question if the plots are true at all. Besides, he exerts his voice and body language to such a degree, along with his natural sense of humor, that every story he tells is a picture book that comes alive.

In fact, the philosophy in every story is simple. The spirit of picture books is to discard what socialization has imposed on every child and to highlight children's innocence. Amazingly, though I once had that in me, I feel the power of re-learning what I have forgotten or left behind.

Prof. Yang also comes up some interesting ideas. For example, there is not a "must-be" ending to a story. Instead, the story can go with the flow. So I've learned that stories and real life are the same--we should allow for many possibilities. Also, the term "ecomocracy" advocates that things have life and that people and things are equal. True, many picture books are fun to read because the objects have their unique points of view as well.

As I listen to Prof. Yang, a really wild idea crosses my mind when I go to the herbarium in the afternoon. I suddenly believe that I am capable of writing a teenage novel for the life in the herbarium!

It's funny to see only women in the study club, from single women to married women with children to grandmas. I wonder where the picture-book loving men are. A really committed mom with a one-year-old infant mom sits next to me, while the baby can't take his eyes off me for a long while. Now, despite the fact that I am childless, I don't feel so anymore. In the end, some children have started their own "play club" whereas the adults are the ones that stay to listen to Prof. Yang. It seems adults need picture books more than children!
