I'd wanted to be part of the tourist hype to go to the castle by taking the funicular. But dozens of tourists were lining in front of me, and the slope nearby looked quite friendly. I thus decided to walk there.
In fact, the castle lies only 48 meter above the Danube river, so it's not a difficult climb.
One can see the Liberty Statue on Gellert Hill from Castle Hill.
The castle was first finished in 1265, constructed at the order of King Bela IV, as a keep surrounded by thick walls. It was a castle complex for Hungarian kings. The subsequent kings had the palace built and expanded the castle. It was around this part that the city grew. The castle was besieged up to 31 times in history, and the palace is a result of palaces destroyed and rebuilt over the course of time, but the Gothic and Baroque elements, along with medieval design are retained.
One can overlook the city from the hill.
There are signs reminding tourists to beware of falling rocks when going through the arches.
The riverscape of the Danube River is poetic.
