Northeast coast in the rain /

On Dad's birthday, we go for a drive along the northeast coast. Though it pours, we are not daunted by the rain at all. Instead, we've never been so determined.

I sketch inside the dry and cozy car. Dad and I ramble on casually. Meanwhile, despite the rain, the fishermen on the cruise are ready to sail on the sea.

We race on the winding road along the sea, finally arriving at Pitouchiao. The scenery is so breathtaking that I can't help taking up my pens. The car is filled with the sounds of my brushes stroking on the paper. After finishing the sketch, I get off the car to take a closer look at the seacoast. The salty smell of the sea fills my nostrils, which is the best gift of the day, apart from the fantastic sea waves.

Afterwards we visit Nanya rocks. What an absolutely poetic combination of rocks, waves, and rain!

We top off the outing with a photo shot at the super romantic Hoping Island.

It's not my birthday, but it's definitely a day much better than a birthday!

The Present /

Most of the time my train of thought lunges forward to the next task on my to-do list. At moments like this, I will think of Thich Nhat Hanh's words: Live in the moment of peeling an orange ...

New York /

When we were daydreaming of our respective travel plans, Dad spoke of taking a sun bath in Central Park this coming autumn. As I heard it, what came to mind was Bryant Park. There I watched my first outdoor movie--An Affair to Remember with Chichi in mid-summer.

The beauty about aging is that a place name can conjure up the colorful memories that I have collected...

This spring I often accompany the boys when they go play on the slide. The strangers never doubt the assumption that I am their mother. Now Von is old enough to take care of Kai, so I don't follow hot on their heels. I move at my own slow pace, letting the children lunge forward in excitement.

Possessing such beautiful memories, Von always reminisces the moments with a joyful smile: Auntie Wanda wears sunglasses, and we go for a sunbath together. Oh, do not forget the blooming azaleas in the backdrop. All these form our dazzling memories of spring 2013.

Confession /

During the first four days of the winter break, I traveled to Yunlin in South Taiwan with my students for voluntary work. In fact, traveling for the sake of work always makes me anxious. It was especially so this year because I started the semester a few months ago with passion and ideal, but when it ended, I didn't see any trace of my effort left in the students. At this moment, I only felt like running away from the crowd.

When my colleagues recorded the whole trip with cameras from the beginning to the end, all I have is this sketch. For me, experiencing the moments was much more important. Only by doing that could I get to see more clearly the true colors of my students.

I did love to observe the looks of the local kids, though. I was especially attracted to the innocent visages and eyes of first and second graders. Time leaves marks in elder children little by little. I found it a revolution against the world in trying to keep that purity in our eyes as we age.

I sneaked into the kitchen to draw how everyone found their place in the kitchen. The beautiful and fresh produce from Yunlin gave so many vivid colors to the space.

I often disappeared for some fresh air when no one noticed. He-An Elementary School is surrounded by farmland. One morning at 7 a.m., I stood by the roadside to draw the rising sun. Next to me was a girl who desired to be loved but was hardly loved. We breathed in the morning silence, but I felt we had said so much.

My colleague took me to a nearby personal market for buying baby corns. In the country, farmers usually sell produce in their trucks. However, this family displayed everything on the ground floor of their own house. Though there wasn't much space, I was surprised by the variety of the choices they offered. I was so thrilled that I couldn't help but borrow a stool from them and began to sketch at the roadside. Sometimes I saw villagers come by scooter. They picked what they wanted and decided how much they would like to have just like in any other market.

Halfway through my sketch, the granny sent her granddaughter to give me a can of coffee for free. When I said goodbye to them, she even invited me for lunch. People in the countryside are so hospitable and generous. I brought home a huge box of produce, most of which was gifts from the villagers.

Looking down from the jetty, it was a vast farm field. At 2 p.m. when the sun shone like in summer, one or two farmers could be spotted. Behind me kids played and laughed happily on the small campus.

In the evening while I was sketching, I heard the head of the village announce important news through the loudspeaker. Standing outside a row of red-brick houses, I could hear what was going on inside as well.

After the trip came to an end, I am wondering about the reason why I had such a hard time during the past semester. Might it be that I didn't open my heart?

the real thing / 真實人生

I was too thrilled to fall asleep last night, so I took out the drawing done with Madeleine and colored it. At midnight, I felt great warmth oozing out of the image and enveloping my whole being. And I was lucky enough to get some sleep after the mind-soothing activity.

This morning I went to the British Museum with Elie. When we got there, the teachers Derek, Matt and Mike were already there waiting. We each took a handout that describes our mission. We were asked to observe an artwork and come up with ten drawings based on form, tone, silhouette, texture, color, detail, location, narrative, written notes and measurements within five hours. This was rather like the unofficial, illustration version of Project Runway. After the brief, we rushed into the museum to look for the object we'd like to do.

Because the tutor Matt highly recommended the Greek area, I decided to sit down when I saw a set of seven sculptures, plus the bench kind of far away from it. I started without thinking twice. Soon Aiden appeared with his newly-shaved head. When I gave him the calligraphy paper, he was so touched that he hugged me. He said yesterday was his birthday, but when he and his girlfriend went to the exhibition they wanted to see, it wasn't open. The same with other plans. The gift really made his day. Before leaving, he couldn't help hugging me again. He is a really adorable boy.

While I was doing this one, a group of school children passed by. The male teacher asked if I could show to them what I had done. I explained to them about my assignment. Then the teacher said, "OK, let's leave ma'am to her work." The way he pronounced "ma'am" sounded so much like "mom." I didn't mind though. A black little boy said to me with his fresh and energetic face before moving on, "It's nice." Only if I could draw that beautiful face...

When I was doing the silhouette drawing, the new tutor Mike came by to see if I had any question. We kind of discussed the definition of silhouette. He took out his fountain pen to demonstrate for me. I couldn't help exclaiming: I have that fountain pen too, but mine is white! As a matter of fact, I left it in Taipei, which I regretted at that instant.

Then Mike asked, "I'd like to locate your accent. I replied, "We learn American English at home." He asked, "Where is your home?" I answered, "Taiwan." So everyone's accent is a map indicating where they come from. No wonder people who run into me are perplexed...

Olivia and Darrell came to join me to draw the sculptures.

This was the first time I drew so intensively in the museum. I didn't have time to eat my sandwich during lunchtime. After having drawn for a while, I'd like a change of media, so I took out toilet paper and Chinese mountain and water paper to fold and crease. I wanted to express the folds of the tunics. I had a blast, but the kids passing by found me weird with a bottle of glue next to me and my hands were all sticky.

Apart from drawing, we had to record other museum-goers' comments as well. While I was in the middle of drawing, a guide was explaining to a group of people. I did my best to jot down notes. You can tell I was fairly busy!

Drawing a large-scale sketch is my Achille's heels. I was even more ashamed when I saw really excellent sketches from my classmates in the afternoon.

In the end I had to write down the history and narrative of the artwork. I was almost dehydrated then, so my drawing wasn't accurate at all. I did pay attention and found that the most popular sculpture is the male statue, Dionysos. I even interviewed two people, asking them if they could choose one to place in their homes, which one would they go for. A little girl chose the horse head on the left, and a big-bellied grandpa chose Dionysos. I like him, but I figure it'd look better to place the horse head as a decorative item.

In the critique session, everyone put down their sketchbooks on the floor for others to thumb through, and afterwards the teachers would give comments. Derek said that many people didn't get what we were supposed to do and that many people drew badly. He demonstrated at the same time good works. For example, Elie's drawings are outstanding. Derek wants us to read books that teach the basics of drawing. He told his 10-year-old daughter that you have to be accurate and use different media depending on different occasions. We should try large scales of paper as well instead of being restricted to small pieces of paper. He stressed that a piece of stone with 3000 years of history show him the simple beauty of life. Because the kids nowadays knew only Nintendo and online games, that was why they started the riots. He said that drawing helps us to engage properly with the world and experience life. Matt wanted us to draw with integrity. Mike added that he would go back to the room and redo the drawings after the session. Derek said that everyone was excited during the first week, but this week some of us will wonder if we are in the wrong courses.

After being dismissed, I ate my sandwich in the lobby. People who came up later than me seemed to be sort of low. The French dude said he wasn't inspired by the Indian culture, which he had picked randomly. But I wonder if he is going to be a designer, he can't tell the clients that their topics are boring right? Then Joe told me he was heartbroken because the teachers met him in private for his drawings. I encouraged him to work hard on this week's assignment. Last the Asian league came to me saying that they didn't quite understand the task today. Even Tatiana's halo was gone today.

Though Mike and Matt said my second drawing is ok, I was lucky enough not to be criticized. I really have to work on the basics of basics. Though I had had enough after having stayed in the museum for more than six hours, I continued my journey after a quick break. At last I analyzed the images I saw automatically based on the arrangement of their tones and colors.

When the museum was about to close, I thought of Derek's words as I walked out of the gate, "You are in the best museum in the world!" Indeed, what is there to complain about, especially when it's just a lousy drawing?

On my ride home, I took the photo. If I had answered Mike's question with this image, he would have been impressed!

Rehab II /

My readers must have the illusion that I've been working hard on rehabilitation. The truth is, I fled after the doctor prescribed a long list of physical therapy for me. I figured that instead of spending the rest of summer in the hospital, my body will feel happier if I stay in a good mood mentally.

However, I did spend much time on my Miss Curly's Rehab series. The handouts given by the doctor are really ugly, and I needed strong motivation to practice painting bamboos. After all, the ill deserve to look at something beautiful.

Though the exercise below is designed for geriatrics, I advise everyone reading my post now to stand up and stretch a little bit to stay healthy!

Advantages of stretching:
It will help your body to relax and remain supple.

When to do stretching exercise?
Anytime, such as after getting up, having stood or sat for a long while.

Tips on stretching:
1. When you start stretching, don't swing back and forth. Pull your body on the premise that it doesn't hurt.
2. Breathe in a slow and rhythmic manner. When bending forth, you should exhale. When remaining still at a posture, breathe slowly.
3. Each move takes about 10 to 20 seconds.

Twelve stretching exercises:

1. The standing position to stretch the calf: Bend the front leg. Straighten the knee of the back leg.

2. Stretch the anterior thigh muscles.

3. Stretch the neck and the upper back forward: With the pelvis positioned to the back of the chair, you bend forth, remaining that way for 10 to 20 seconds.

Straighten your lumbar (waist) spine, thoracic (chest) spine, and cervical (neck) spine one after another.

4. Stretch the neck sideways: Don't raise the opposing shoulder. Bend the neck the other way afterwards.

5. Stretch the posterior muscles of the shoulder: Use the left hand to pull the right elbow to the chest. Remain that way for 10 to 20 seconds. The same goes with the opposing side.

6. Stretch the back neck, the chest and the waist: Turn slowly from the waist spine, the chest spine and the neck spine. Remain that way for 10 to 20 seconds. The same goes with the opposing side.

7. Stretch hip muscles: Place the right leg above the left knee. Bend the upper body from the hips. The same goes with the opposing side.

8. Stretch the lower back and the posterior thigh muscles: Bend one leg and pull it toward the chest of the opposing side. Remain that way for 10 to 20 seconds. Go to the other leg and do the same.

9. Extend and Stretch: Stretch both legs and arms.

10. Stretch the lower back and the hip sideways: Bend one knee 90 degrees, with the opposing leg straightened. Remain that way for 10 to 20  seconds. The same goes with the opposing side.

11. Bend the lower back: Lie flat on your back. Hold both legs below the knees and exhale. Remain that way for 10 to 20 seconds.

12. Lie on your stomach to stretch the back: Use two hands placed shoulder-width apart to support the upper body for about 10 to 20 seconds.

Slow Movement /

After taking medicine for my gastroenteritis for more than a month, I made the decision to switch to seeing a Chinese medicine doctor last week. Upon feeling my pulse, the doctor cleared all my confusion right away, saying that it was my brain that caused all the discomfort. It moved too fast for my body to catch up. That’s why at this moment I am relearning the art of being a “vegetarian.”

again and again / 再一次

With a little bit of fear, I re-take Chinese painting lessons after an interval of four years. This sunny morning, I sat in front of the desk grounding the ink peacefully. Little by little, my fear of not being able to do well evaporated. I took a photo of my first work not because it is good but because I hope each of my future works will be better than this.
