Miss Owl's busy! /

Apart from my blog, I've also opened a new FB and Instagram page to share a drawing on a daily basis. In the beginning, I could still handle both, but later, with me getting more and more ambitious, I can't afford the workload anymore. The biggest decision after my birthday is that I'd like to invite my blog visitors to meet me somewhere else. Thank you so much!

Dadaocheng Wharf /

Let's go to Dadaocheng Wharf for the sunset. It's more a public space for the locals than a tourist spot.

Everyone relaxes in their own ways. I can't help loosening up as I observe and draw how others live.

As the sky darkens, the wharf becomes a performing stage for local singers. They can be seen on the square, next to the temples or under the banyan trees. Rows of empty plastic chairs wave to the passers-by, inviting them to be part of the show. Moreover, the music is accompanied by the sophisticated dance of middle-aged men. What a splendid way to spend an evening in Taipei!

Yilan /

Dongshan River Ecopark

Sketching appears to be a solitary act, but the truth is, I've been sending quiet messages saying, "Come interact with me!" Today I decided to try a very classical ink pen and ink for my outdoor sketch. My tool attracted a lady who's highly interested in it, but my favorites were two young girls who sat to me in silence.

Luodong Forestry Culture Garden

I looked for a hidden corner around the lake in the culture garden, but a senior lady living in the neighborhood couldn't help rambling with me on her daily routine walk. I had the feeling that we might have talked too much, but when I think back today, I realize her words remind me of my goal this year, that is, to be more ambitious!

Fuyang Park /

I miss sketching badly, and the sun today beckons me to go outside for fresh air. I travel to the forest inside the city--Fuyang Park. The hidden corner is quiet even on weekends. I sit on the narrow path, having the green garden all to myself.

People in Taipei certainly how to make full use of the park. The hills are their outdoor study with the bamboos leaves swaying in the background and sunshine streaming in from the four sides...

Physics of love /

I have experienced some people's happiness of being in love this week, so I can't help flying like them ...

Physics of Love

by Kim Inwook

Her mass not in proportion to her physical volume
That nymph as delicate as violet
That nymph as airy as petals
Attracts me far more than the mass of the earth

In the blink of an eye
Like Newton's apple
I fall at her feet involuntarily
"Bang!"
"Bang!"

From the sky to the earth
My heart continues fluttering at a dazzling speed
That is first love

The Bangkok Book 3 /

Food Stands

Street food plays a very important part in Thai cuisine. Food stands can be found at roadsides or along the alleyways either alone or in a group, satisfying people's appetites of all senses. I don't eat street food, but I just love the atmosphere. In the morning, both the locals and foreigners can be seen to order a bowl of noodles and take their time to eat under the sun. After work, two or three friends would chat over a table of food along with chilling drinks. This is the beauty of the Thai style of life!

One morning when I am sketching a food stand, I draw the attention of an old German gentleman. He says that he's currently dwelling in Bangkok. I ask, "Are you going to stay here forever?" He answers, "I am 76 years old. What is 'forever' for me?" After our talk, I can't help thinking, I am turning 40 in half a year, and that means I have only half of my life left, if I am lucky. I should seize the time to do what I feel like doing!

Beverages are extremely popular. The vendors pour different kinds of powder into the cups. After stirring, they would pour the liquid into a whole cup of ice cubes. My new friend from Shanghai describes the taste of Thai milk tea as "so cool!"

The tuk-tuk can be turned into a stall. I am wondering if he's selling desserts.

There are many traditional noodle shops in the city. On my way to Sala Daeng BTS station every day, I can't help stopping to take a look at this place. While sketching, I find that they have quite a number of customers.

It might look kind of old on the outside, but inside it is decorated with wooden tables and chairs, which has a retro feel.

A few days later I finally walk inside for a bowl of pork noodles. The owners and staff are extremely friendly. I even show my previous sketch of the shop to the lady owner. They, meanwhile, help me to review Thai.

食
Food

Four jars of condiments can be found on each table. Thais do not hesitate to add more sugar or chili powder  to their food!

I do not record what I eat right from the beginning. One evening I suddenly feel very lonely when eating all by myself, so I just take out my book and pens. Strangely, my loneliness evaporates right away. I also get to have detailed observations of the ingredients. For one thing, I discover that salted eggs go with fried rice.

Mama instant noodles are fairly popular. They can be eaten as salad. They can also be turned into stir-fried or soup noodles. One of the advantages to draw and eat at the same time is that I eat more slowly. I also have a perfect excuse to sit for a long time in a restaurant.

This is my first bowl of noodles in a market. It tastes very sweet, but the customer sitting opposite me seasons it with one more spoon of sugar! It costs only 13 bahts, which is much cheaper than the cheap street food in Bangkok.

Yummy mixed chicken rice. I love the well-seasoned rice.

During the first few days of the trip, I am too careless to remind the server that I want no chili in my food, so my tongue is literally on fire. Later, I mostly go for stir-fried rice, which is a very safe choice.

The omelette rice is another conservative option.

Fami Mart

I find it pathetic to have to eat food from a convenience store. Sometimes it's because I want to watch Thai lakorns in my hotel room on time. Interestingly, bigger Fami marts have a small restaurant in them offering hot food.

My breakfast sponsor is also Fami Mart. I did not bother to record the 7-11 series, which is even sadder.

I personally find it fun to draw and sketch breakfast. I feel like a professional gourmet.

On the last day I buy a box of jackfruit desserts, which are very very very sweet!

Next time when I go back to Thailand, I will try more kinds of food with my not-so-strong stomach!

The girl says, "Today the sky is colorless."
I say, "Color it yourself."

Everyday doodles /

Every day I receive a slip of paper with the names of absent students on it. I felt I could do something about it, but never really got down to work. Finally, this semester I decided to take action by doodling an everyday story on it. It's quite magnificent when they are placed together for a group photo!

The most terrifying thing /

This semester we read The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. The protagonist Ivan, a silverback kept in a mall, loves to draw. One day he draws ten bananas. For unknown reasons, I am obsessed with this. I've been binge-drawing bananas for three days on end.

After trying remembered drawing and imagined drawing, I can't resist observational drawing. It strikes me that there lies a huge gap between my memory and the reality!

Last week I once thought I had lost the ability to draw and imagine. Luckily, I nurtured it and had it back.

For me, the most terrifying thing in the world is to live a life WITHOUT any imagination!

Power of a rose /

I bought a beautiful rose on Yon-kang Street last Saturday night. During the following days, I was either taking photos of or drawing it because it was totally impossible to resist her charm.

I let my ideas take me wherever they wanted to go. The power of rose is so miraculous that I bet there must be rose knights whose mission is to mend broken hearts.

The next day after Dad returned from a wedding banquet, he placed another rose on my windowsill with love. My heart shines so....

Handdrawn Seachien Village /

I say, I need to sketch a place to really know it.

I took many photos this winter in Seachien Village. However, to build the memories of a place into my head, I have to sit down for one or two hours to sketch. What really excited me was, I drew some sketches of the same place last year, and I was looking forward to what I would produce this year.

The weather was deceptively sunny, but the cold wind raged as I sat on the embankment drawing. As I had tried sketching on freezing days in Europe, the last thing I wanted to do was to walk away without having finished any image.

If I hadn't drawn the sketch, I wouldn't have gone up to the farmer and asked him about his crops. In fact, I had walked past him cooly right after having taken photos earlier that day.

I waved goodbye to him when he was about to ride his scooter home after our chat.

I could never resist the charm of these red-brick houses whenever I came. I did the sketches in the evening last year as well. This time a lady who came out to dump garbage spotted me. She asked if I was killing time. I said no. I came to draw the houses on purpose because I found them so beautiful.

When I came last year, I felt a great force in me, which I directed to drawing. However, this year I was in a very poised state of mind. Without the fire, I knew the drawings aren't that powerful.

On the last day before we left, I went to the same spot behind the cafeteria of He-an Elementary School. I drew right there last year, and I'd like to see what my picture this year would look like. Last year my student Croc emerged out of nowhere and spent a few minutes with me while I was sketching. Interestingly, this year I had new companions. The two kids living in the house on the left side of the image came to greet me. I thus realized, we will always run into new people. There are new sparks for every moment. In my world, there isn't "the best moment" for every moment has its beauty.
