Don Wai Floating Market /

My friend Bai-fang lives near Don Wai Floating Market. It seems a must-do to eat a bowl of duck noodles here.

I love vegetables of various colors in the market placed in inflated plastic bags. What a feast for the eyes!

There are vendors on the river, and fortunately, not so many as in other touristy floating markets.

The cruise gives me an opportunity to take a peek into Thais' daily lives. The views along Tajin River are serene and graceful. Well, this place has become one of my favorite spots in Thailand!

There are mysterious streams leading from the river as well as water chalets.

Also, really poetic modern cafes, Thai guesthouses and shabby old houses.

Night market in Ayothaya /

Food vendors and the staff dressed in traditional Thai costumes dot the market, and somehow I feel I am in the ancient Thailand!

Mango with sticky rice /

My trip to Thailand was as sweet as mango with sticky rice. I totally fall for the charm of the country and its people!

Too much beef /

One of the luxuries on rainy days is to eat hot pot, but I went for the beef for three days consecutively. Well, I feel very guilty about causing global warming to worsen...

The Bangkok Book 3 /

Food Stands

Street food plays a very important part in Thai cuisine. Food stands can be found at roadsides or along the alleyways either alone or in a group, satisfying people's appetites of all senses. I don't eat street food, but I just love the atmosphere. In the morning, both the locals and foreigners can be seen to order a bowl of noodles and take their time to eat under the sun. After work, two or three friends would chat over a table of food along with chilling drinks. This is the beauty of the Thai style of life!

One morning when I am sketching a food stand, I draw the attention of an old German gentleman. He says that he's currently dwelling in Bangkok. I ask, "Are you going to stay here forever?" He answers, "I am 76 years old. What is 'forever' for me?" After our talk, I can't help thinking, I am turning 40 in half a year, and that means I have only half of my life left, if I am lucky. I should seize the time to do what I feel like doing!

Beverages are extremely popular. The vendors pour different kinds of powder into the cups. After stirring, they would pour the liquid into a whole cup of ice cubes. My new friend from Shanghai describes the taste of Thai milk tea as "so cool!"

The tuk-tuk can be turned into a stall. I am wondering if he's selling desserts.

There are many traditional noodle shops in the city. On my way to Sala Daeng BTS station every day, I can't help stopping to take a look at this place. While sketching, I find that they have quite a number of customers.

It might look kind of old on the outside, but inside it is decorated with wooden tables and chairs, which has a retro feel.

A few days later I finally walk inside for a bowl of pork noodles. The owners and staff are extremely friendly. I even show my previous sketch of the shop to the lady owner. They, meanwhile, help me to review Thai.

Food

Four jars of condiments can be found on each table. Thais do not hesitate to add more sugar or chili powder  to their food!

I do not record what I eat right from the beginning. One evening I suddenly feel very lonely when eating all by myself, so I just take out my book and pens. Strangely, my loneliness evaporates right away. I also get to have detailed observations of the ingredients. For one thing, I discover that salted eggs go with fried rice.

Mama instant noodles are fairly popular. They can be eaten as salad. They can also be turned into stir-fried or soup noodles. One of the advantages to draw and eat at the same time is that I eat more slowly. I also have a perfect excuse to sit for a long time in a restaurant.

This is my first bowl of noodles in a market. It tastes very sweet, but the customer sitting opposite me seasons it with one more spoon of sugar! It costs only 13 bahts, which is much cheaper than the cheap street food in Bangkok.

Yummy mixed chicken rice. I love the well-seasoned rice.

During the first few days of the trip, I am too careless to remind the server that I want no chili in my food, so my tongue is literally on fire. Later, I mostly go for stir-fried rice, which is a very safe choice.

The omelette rice is another conservative option.

Fami Mart

I find it pathetic to have to eat food from a convenience store. Sometimes it's because I want to watch Thai lakorns in my hotel room on time. Interestingly, bigger Fami marts have a small restaurant in them offering hot food.

My breakfast sponsor is also Fami Mart. I did not bother to record the 7-11 series, which is even sadder.

I personally find it fun to draw and sketch breakfast. I feel like a professional gourmet.

On the last day I buy a box of jackfruit desserts, which are very very very sweet!

Next time when I go back to Thailand, I will try more kinds of food with my not-so-strong stomach!

Red bean soup /

I spot a traditional shop on the corner of Zhong-zhen Rd. before heading into Luo-dong Night Market. It has the classic charm that draws me to it. The shop is run by an old man with his wife, filled with the rumbling noise of the stove on which red beans are being constantly cooked. Though the shop is not as crowded as the night market,  customers stream in, waiting to be warmed with a bowl of red bean soup full of tang-yuan on the surface in winter.

What a journey! /

This weekend we have our last workshop in the herbarium. Then, we will take a two-month long break to plan for next year's activities. In the beginning, I made some effort to accept the decision, but now when looking back, I really appreciate Guei-mei's wisdom in coming up with the suggestion. Thus, the luffa lesson draws a lovely period to 2015 for us.

It's hard to imagine that weeks ago kids were still crowding around the desk to watch a video clip on my tiny Apple screen. Now we have the luxury of a museum theater.

We feel the power of plants with our tastebuds.

Menu for our afternoon tea: Apple cinnamon raison black tea of Twinings and an array of chips seasoned with rosemary garlic.

Today we have less than ten kids. Among them is our VIP student Bo-huei. He tells me in excitement, "Mom said you will be taking a break for two months, so we feel we have to come." He also shares with the other kids his previous experiences, "Here, you can eat and play!"

Guei-mei's cuisine: Oyster soup with luffa.

My personal VIP guest Yoyo comes as well!

The children have much fun running around in the gardens. Of course they do not miss the rarely-open greenhouse.

This week I have been receiving God's gifts for me as a reward of my hard work and good will throughout the whole year. Bo-huei brings an enormous one with him. I attempted to read a story I had written to the children back in September, but I had the wrong file with me. I wound up reading only the first sentence to them. However, this really thoughtful boy asks me three months later, "What about the story you wrote?" Upon hearing the question, I felt someone putting a warm palm upon my heart. Luckily, I  did rewrite it with full might. I answered, "Oh, it's totally different!" And more importantly, I sent it to the contest a few weeks ago. Though I have not reached my goal of having my story published, I know that in some corners in this vast city, some people take my dream as seriously as me.

This year I have not only gained much knowledge but also the confidence to teach science from the herbarium workshops. Moreover, I've encountered many adults and children who benefit me in every way. I have to say that this is the best journey of the year.

Some parents are eager to sign up for their kids for the coming events, but we have to ask everyone to wait with patience. We will reopen in spring, and by then, we will surprise you with new topics as well as my new mysterious teaching partner!

Stockholm /

The renowned Stockholm City Hall.

How can Swedes make a political venue so elegant?

The Blue Hall is where the Nobel Prize Banquet is held every year on December, 10.

Take the windows for example. There are various designs of shapes and patterns.

It feels more like an art museum than a city hall.

The Golden Hall is named after the decorative mosaics made of more than 18 million glass and gold pieces. On the center of the wall is the Queen of Lake Maelaren, which represents Stockholm being honored by the East and the West.

I capture a super romantic image outside the city hall!

The outdoor market outside the Old Haymarket: Most stands are run by immigrants.

The indoor market is chic. Each of the vendors has his/her distinctive style.

This is a feast for the eyes!

There's something to see even on the dining table!

Drottningham Palace is also known as the Swedish Versailles. It was originally built in the late 16th century. It served as a summer residence for the Swedish royal family during most of the 18th century. Now it is the private residence of the royal family.

The baroque garden outside the palace.

The garden is surrounded by the woods.

I am intrigued by an exhibition in the palace, which introduces the plants grown in the orangery in the past.

The first orangery at Drottningham was a simple hothouse. The erection in 1714 of a larger orangery in stone made it possible to accommodate a greater variety of exotic plants.

I find the exhibition to be cool in that even the fragrances of plants are provided to enhance the visitor's olfactory experience.

I wonder what Stockholm is like in winter?
