Red bean soup /

I spot a traditional shop on the corner of Zhong-zhen Rd. before heading into Luo-dong Night Market. It has the classic charm that draws me to it. The shop is run by an old man with his wife, filled with the rumbling noise of the stove on which red beans are being constantly cooked. Though the shop is not as crowded as the night market,  customers stream in, waiting to be warmed with a bowl of red bean soup full of tang-yuan on the surface in winter.

Lisbon 1 /

I found this year really magical. I could point my finger at any place on the European map, and then I'd be there within a few hours.

I'd wanted to go to Lisbon for a while. The biggest reason is that I so love Portuguese illustrations. I even dreamed of the city after watching Wim Wenders' film Lisbon Story. I didn't quite remember what it's about, but it became my last wish to visit Portugal before leaving Europe.

Summer in Lisbon is sunny, and the streets are lined with jacaranda, which gives the city a very dreamy feel.

Though Lisbon feels like a lonely city forgotten in time, there are so many beautiful images along the way.

People love to lean on the balcony railings.

Fine patterns are found everywhere.

The colorful buildings evoke a feel of complacency not swayed by time or change.

Portugal is renowned for azulejo. On the facades of ordinary building or apartments the refined tiles are so eye-catching.

The lovely blue building is actually a train station.

I feel kind of ashamed because I didn't have time to prepare before setting out for Portugal. So for me, this was a very "free" trip. Had it not been for Vitor, the compulsive B and B owner who briefed us for more than one hour per morning, I wouldn't have had a clue where to go.

For me, this is a very beautiful building, whose name I didn't have the foggiest idea of... In fact, it is Rossio Station, where trains to Sintra are taken here.

Vitor emphasized that we had to take tram 28. We were so excited upon seeing the yellow tram that we hopped onto it immediately.

There was something to see in the tram car.

The scenery outside wowed me.

Well, the tram ride lasted no more than 2 minutes, and we later realized it is not line 28. Each of us paid 3 euros, but we were rewarded with some brilliant images.

The roads in Lisbon go up and down, so as long as you get to the hill top, you'll be exposed to the amazing city panorama.

Also, the sea is there for you.

My cravings grew when we passed by pastry shops.

This is Pasteis de Belem highly recommended by Vitor. However, my taste buds didn't detect any other taste than sugar. The aroma of eggs seems to have evaporated into the air...

Paris 2 /

Food

The costs of food are no lower than those of London, but the quality far outruns the latter. Take simple bread for example. French bread is so much more tasty.

Super yummy chicken bagel.

Salmon baguette. I often picnic with others in parks. But even simple food such as sandwiches give me a great sense of satisfaction.

One day I walk in the renowned restaurant La Coupole. In a few words, it is not only one of the largest restaurants in Paris but also a gathering place for famous writers and artists such as Hemingway, Sartre, Falkner, Picasso etc.

It is an art gallery inside too.

Green salad and bread.

The main course is curry lamb, with fruit sauce and side dishes. This meal costs me an arm and a leg, but it's a very unique life experience.

La Rotonde is only a few steps away from La Coupole, and it is another restaurant/cafe loaded with history.

Across from La Coupole is Le Select. My low-key tour guide said this restaurant is more popular with Americans.

Sweets

It'd be a shame not to try desserts in Paris. The sweets here look so tempting and French people eat a lot of them, but Parisians are so slim and good-looking.

Eclairs come in various colors.

How can I leave Paris without trying macarons?

Chocolate

With Easter coming, the display windows are decorated with creative forms of chocolate.

This is chocolate made based on works by famous artists.

Cafes

Parisians want both high tech and sunshine.

Sitting in an outdoor cafe is not just about looking at people, but also about being gazed at.

This is the celebrated Les Deux Magots. You'd better be well-dressed and come sit here for a whole afternoon.

Cafe de Flore, where you can find stories of well-known writers and artists.
