Wanda's art class 2 /

Von is going to start his elementary school life next week. He is a miniature adult now, having absorbed all sorts of knowledge from us and books. This should call for a celebration, but meanwhile, something is missing.

Kai is three years and two months old. Lately he has become quite polite and mature. Children stride into adulthood at such a lightning pace that adults have to be very observant to see what they have gained and lost.

Born with a middle-aged mindset, I always looked at other kids with a little bit of disdain and indifference. It was not until I became an adult that I realized how pathetic it was to live without their free mind. So when others learn to become grown-ups, I learn to be a child. And I want to help children hold onto that freedom.

NO such thing /

Part I

After I started working, I do not have so much free time at my disposal. But the less time I have, the more I want to draw. This morning I have to leave for work, so I got up early and had breakfast quickly just to draw the background of a pop-up card I'd like to try. I really enjoyed myself. It was not until I almost finished it that I realized I had drawn on the wrong side! Sigh...I hardly have carefully-made plans carried out in the exactly same ways as I'd like to.

It's alright. Tomorrow this mistake will become the boys' weekend surprise!

Part II

I was making the paper-cut dinosaurs until eleven p.m. on Friday night. Today the boys will have to look hard for them and count the number. There'll be a merry mess in the house today!

Quentin Blake /

In early November when I learned that Quentin Blake would appear in the South Ken Kids' Festival hosted by Institut francais, I booked right away the ticket for his speech with David McKee, the author and illustrator of Elmer the patchwork Elephant. Then I was full of all sorts of fantastic ideas on what present I could make for Quentin.

However, only God knew that during the past three weeks, apart from preparing for the Romeo and Juliet project, I didn't have any spare time for even doodling. I didn't start making a card for Quentin until this morning. The theme is about a tree that I saw in Min-che this past summer. It reminded me of Quentin's book The Green Ship.

Quentin is my idol, but another important reason is that next term we have to interview four practitioners. I want very much to interview him, so I wrote my intention at the end of the letter.

Because of my seat, I couldn't include David in my photo, not that I ignored him on purpose. I also love the discussed artist Andre Francois. Both illustrators mentioned that Francois taught them a license of freedom. There's something fearless about his works. For him, painting is more about presenting how something feels rather than the anatomy. Though his illustrations appeared often in magazines and posters, there is a fine art quality in his works. It was really the right time for me to hear these words. Lately I have had problems letting go, and I haven't had much confidence in myself either. Hearing that some artists paint how they feel, I recalled the importance of feeling at ease when drawing. Quentin and David are both more into imaginary drawings. David said that he keeps the habit of drawing in sketchbooks, but his sketches don't appear directly in his works.

While I was waiting in queue to get my book autographed, the mother and the son in front of me are either family or friends of my classmate Jess. The mother took out a drawing done by the little boy, which was meant as a gift for Quentin. I was secretly glad that he helped me pave my road so that I wouldn't appear weird in doing something similar later. The mother said the little boy would like to be an illustrator, and she asked for him how he could achieve that. Quentin replied, "You have to draw every day, if you like it." The whole scene was very lovely. Quentin is the godfather in the British illustration industry, but he looks very down-to-earth. For people who can't recognize him, he is no more than an ordinary old gentleman, but of course he is more than that.

When my turn came, I gave Quentin the card immediately, and he opened it for a look. I explained to him that his book came to mind when I saw the tree. I told him that I am an illustration major in Camberwell. I also want to thank him for inspiring me. He said that he isn't teaching now. He used to know Camberwell better. I went on to say that it's more fun to draw than to teach. I was glad that he didn't read my words on the back of the card. After meeting him in person, I suddenly felt that it was more than enough, even if I didn't get to interview him next term. After all, I am in London and I have met my favorite illustrator!

On my way to V&A Museum, I climbed from the tunnel to the square in front of Natural History Museum. An amazing surprise was waiting for me--the shiny carousel spinning on a cold winter day! It is what days in London mean to me in my life. Whether I'll make it or not in illustration, at least I've done my best and I am also blessed. Though I am only halfway through life, I can say I have no regret...

LUCKY DAY / 幸運日

Every time when I have brought forth a new item, I have to take my time the next day to collect inspirations. I had planned a relaxing morning for writing calligraphy to stay zen, but when I opened my email box, guess what? I received my FIRST transaction order! Mom was busy preparing Jei's wedding in the living room. I couldn't help jumping and shouting at her. It took me a whole day to prepare the package and mail it to my first customer.

Lately I have been less obsessed with my gray hair. When taking a shower, I even say thanks to them. It's they that help me come up with so many good ideas.

By this evening, I had won my lucky star's help and got my second deal. I am really in seventh heaven today! I'll head into tomorrow with more zeal!

to change or not / 守舊或革新

There's something fun about Etsy. Every seller sees the shop statistics of their stores, including the numbers and sources of visitors on a regular basis. The popularity of items is made public to everyone. The information can be translated into very significant messages for sellers. Having run Little Room for two weeks, the most popular item so far is the first one--100 kinds of love. In the first few days, I had the impression that people didn't think especially highly of it. Thus I kept thinking up items of completely different styles. Now I can't help wondering, shall I repeat similar styles or themes? I finally understand why famous artists or musicians stick to the same style. In the end, I settle for a middle point in between. Well, I can always come up with something totally new tomorrow!

I need to create for someone for some people. Even though my main target is producing products, most of my inspirations still come from folks around me. For me, that is the happiest form of making something. Often new ideas spring from pointless chitchats with others. For example, my conversation with Meiyen a few days ago made me come up with the courage set. After all, we might not have someone next to us when we are low. At this moment, if we can draw an envelope from the courage set, we'll be recharged with vibes right away because of the words of encouragement!

Little Room /

Recently I've been constantly asked if I am thrilled about the coming trip. I usually pause before replying, "I am too busy with my everyday plans to dwell on the change that will occur after next week." Etsy takes up most of my time. And now I strongly wish I enjoyed wide publicity. It's funny how a decision can drastically change a person's thinking.

Spending tons of hours at my desk doodling and designing every day, I can feel my slight progress at a snail's pace. Apart from that, I can hardly tell others with concrete evidence how far my efforts have taken me. Erica's mom lets me prepare my business cards and place them at Luco Cafe to expand my circle. I draw and write on each card with my two hands, and that's why I completely understand the difficulty of starting a business from scratch.

But I tell myself, if I stick to my goal, there'll be a day when I make it!

New attempt /

My Etsy shop is open. However, I haven’t got a grasp of clients’ tastes. If you have something to share, please leave me a message!
