Postcrossing

I hadn't logged onto Postcrossing for long. However, to demonstrate how to use the website to my new kids, I purposefully pressed "send a postcard" the other day. But my procrastination made me feel very guilty as time went by.

My addressee is a Russian lady who inspired me to base my postcard on the concept of a Russian doll. Well, I felt a great sense of relief after drawing the postcard, and better yet, I discovered the beauty of a biro pen!

Writing children's poetry /

Kai has been reading many children's poetry in recent months. After we recite poems from the Mandarin Daily News this morning, I invite him to write a poem. We finally settle on the topic of Kai's cousin Yoyo. We thus come up with our first collaborated piece of work.

For My Cousin Yoyo
written by Kyle Fang and Wanda You

I hope you are forever healthy
I hope you are tall and strong
I see you as the red sun
Shining with the light of
Dad and Mom's son

When doing the illustration, I give only one reminder, which is, Kyle has to capture the essence of light.
The picture turns out to be one of Kai's best works, and the postcard will fly to Yoyo soon!

Weight of poignancy /

I aspired to be a scientist for a while. I also tried to hold reins on my imaginations. But lately I have been trapped in panic and worried if I have turned out to be a very dull person. Luckily, when I collected the girls' assignments this past week, a drawing by Christine freed me. Every brushstroke of this girl is so poignant that it does cut into the depths of my heart, in a good way.

Yet, after I took a glimpse at others' drawings, I found Joy's thief a strong contrast to Christine's. True, shouldn't a thief steal in a "light" and "unnoticeable" manner?

Before leaving the office, I asked my colleague Anna, "Could you name me an interesting cafe where I can sketch?" She suggested the campus of NTU. "There is an outdoor cafe which faces the lake. The view is quite nice."

I was lucky enough to be offered a ride by another colleague. On our way she made such remarks: NTU is getting uglier and uglier. Well, I can't agree more with her.

Though I did not find the view of the lake as suggested, I saw something equally charming in the front yard of the cafe. My mission is to record the beauty of as many places as possible before they become more artificial.

The Warrior and the Ladybug /

Liang is a very talented little boy, but he seems to lack a sense of order. I took a look at his works. I couldn't stop wowing at his dynamic figures.

To me these warriors are flying even inside!

Liang draws many things. Whenever he's into a subject, he will come up with hundreds of drawings centering around it.

I don't remember having seen Liang in person. I was just wondering if I could have a dialog with him through images in his art language, it should be fun. Thus, I spent a few days imitating his style.

Apart from that, I of course had to collect reference images. I was especially attracted to those of Japanese warriors. Also, I asked Von and Kai to be my models because I needed more exercise in drawing moving figures. In the end it took me some time and efforts to decide on the media. Since I am no longer in Camberwell, I would like to be brief about the whole process.

I hope Liang will be surprised upon seeing every image, so I put each picture in one envelope rather than adopt the form of a handmade book.

The Warrior and the Ladybug

written and illustrated by Wei-chuen You

"I am a warrior! I want to make friends!"

"Don't run! Be my friends!"

"Why are they silent? I want to be their friend!"

"Who are you?"
"I am the ladybug."
"What are you doing?"
"I want to be your friend."

"So if you want to make friends, you tickle them?"
"Nope! How did you feel when I was crawling upon you?"

"Your touch was as soft as the clouds."

"It seems that you knew what I need."

"Most of all, I knew you really like me."

"I am sometimes rude and upset people, but you are still willing to be my friend..."
"Well said! But did you ever think of this when you were trying to make friends?"

"I'd like to apologize to them. Will you go with me?"

Often I don't have a clue what kind of role these images play in children's mind, but at least I benefit from the whole process...

Everyone / 每個人

The Warrior and the Ladybug / written and illustrated by Wei-chuen You

It took me a month to write and illustrate a story for another very special child--Liang. I personally love the format of this story. Now I am in the habit that Lu got me into--I ask myself the question if I like my work. Thanks to my friends and family's help, now I no longer worry about what others might think since I have finally felt confident of myself. However, that doesn't mean I don't take constructive advice.

Lately I've been thinking what I can do to change the world. In my opinion, for the starter, every adult and every child should own a picture book about their own life...

As the name suggests /

I made some change over my name in summer. Wei is now written in a little bit complicated way, though the pronunciation remains the same. We intended to ask for good luck in love, but since then, there still hasn't been any eligible bachelor in my life, but I have felt the immense power of my new name.

Jun looked up the new word in the dictionary. Wei means female monkey, but it also means "help," which has become a main theme in my life now. Sometimes I wish I didn't see or know so much, because I just can't let things alone without taking any action.

I like to help people, and it was one of things I missed the most in the UK, but God, could I exchange my brownie points for a really good guy?
